Using Tree Stands or Blinds while Hunting in Virginia

Tree vs. Blind Hunting

by Ryan Taylor

Many times people fail to make the correct decision when deciding to hunt whitetails on the ground or in the tree. There are many determining factors to consider when you have the options to do either one. Stand hunting is what many hunters prefer. They will tell you they live and die by the tree stand. Other hunters are such great artists that they can hide a blind by covering it up with leaves, branches, grasses, corn stalks, and even plain sticks. I guess you could say time plays an important role in choosing each hunting location.

For stand hunting, hunters typically stay between two and five hours. Very rarely do stand hunters stay in the stand all day long. Blind hunters tend to stay in the stand for a lengthier amount of time. Comfort plays a big role in stand hunting and blind hunting as well. You are able stretch out and get much more comfortable in a blind versus a tree stand where you can only stand up to stretch. Time also plays a role in set-up. Setting up a blind and then “brushing” it in takes some time and patience. Basically blending in is of optimum Read the rest of this entry

How to stop a metal deer stand from squeaking?

James S asked:

My metal platform rubs against the tree and when I stop on it squeaks. What is odor less and will stop the squeaking?
I believe it squeaks where the metal touches the tree. I use a rachet strap and tighted very tight, there is some sqeaking when I step from the seat to the platform. Just curious how to stop the squeaking.

The Professa asked:

I am looking for a good, safe climbing deer stand for a beginner. It must come with a body harness and a video that shows how to use it.

To answer the question is pretty easy. Look at your goals and make your plans. For example if your goal is to not come home without a deer then you are going to need all the help you can get. But, if your budget won’t allow you to be this demanding you might want to have the goal of having fun and getting away for a while.

Deer hunting is a lot like playing poker. It is truly a game of skill. Therefore, if you are experienced at reading the habits of whitetail deer from where they bed down to where they feed and you can find the bottleneck in between and you have the time to do the scouting .. hey go it alone. While it is dark or getting dark I listen to music on a “walkman” during the day light I watch movies on a DVD player. It is a given that you are still paying more attention to hunting than the movie.
During the 60s and 70s I was in the Army and lost most of my hearing, but with earphones I can hear enough to understand what is being said or sang. My head phones are for both ears but I only use it on one. I also monitor the radios that I have on every hunter on my place. I might get more if I didn’t use them but I will tell you this past year I did get an Axis deer and a white tail, both bucks, along with a Tom Turkey. I have tried to read but it makes me very sleepy and when I look around I end up loosing my place.
